Director - Automation & Robotics Research InstituteThe University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) seeks candidates to fill the position of Director of the Automation & Robotics Research Institute and the Fort Worth Chamber Foundation Endowed Chair in Manufacturing. The Director reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering. Established in 1987, the Automation & Robotics Research Institute (ARRI) is the premier manufacturing assistance, applied research and technology deployment center in the Southwest. ARRI occupies a 48,000 sq. ft. modern research facility, fully equipped with manufacturing and robotics labs, assembly cells and a full range of up-to-date computing equipment and software. ARRI serves as a link between UTA research and local, national and international industry for deployment of manufacturing tools and technology and industry-relevant research programs. ARRI also hosts the Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center (a NIST MEP Affiliate), the Small Business Development Center for Enterprise Excellence and the Cross Timbers Procurement Technical Assistance Center. ARRI has expertise in a wide range of areas spanning most of the engineering disciplines as well as business improvement and enterprise management. Research areas of recent significant accomplishments include advanced controls and sensors, liquid metal jet technology, reconfigurable assembly, free form fabrication, enterprise engineering and surface finishing. New research initiatives are also in progress in exciting areas such as MEMS, biosensors, bioengineering, laser micro machining and nanotechnology, several in collaboration with other outstanding UTA research centers. UTA seeks a Director who is nationally recognized for accomplishments in an area compatible with the mission of ARRI, who has exhibited successful administrative capabilities and who has the insight and enthusiasm necessary to shape the goals and vision of ARRI for future years. ARRI was established because of the recognition by area leaders of the critical importance of manufacturing to the economic growth and the financial well being of the DFW Metroplex. The new Director will be challenged to lead ARRI to make significant contributions to its mission to improve the competitiveness of manufacturing and related enterprises through excellence in research and the sharing and deployment of knowledge. Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in an engineering discipline, with a record of achievement and scholarship commensurate with an outstanding academic and/or industrial career. Candidates must have demonstrated success in administration of an academic and/or industrial research organization, securing research funding from both government and industry and transferring technology from research to industry. Both academic and industry experience are desired. Candidates with the prerequisite experience and accomplishments may be considered for a tenured faculty position in the College of Engineering as well. The University of Texas at Arlington is a full-service research and teaching university with approximately 25,000 students. UTA is nationally recognized in many key subject disciplines. The College of Engineering has approximately 2,100 engineering undergraduate students, 2,000 graduate students and 130 faculty members. Engineering programs in Electrical, Industrial, Computer Science, Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil, and Biomedical Engineering offer degrees through the Ph.D. The university is located in the middle of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, a major industrial center with an abundant opportunity for industry interaction in aerospace manufacturing, telecommunications, electronics, logistics, transportation and many others.
