Dr. Ken Roemer Hosts Miss Navajo Screening

The English Department's Dr. Ken Roemer hosted a public screening of Miss Navajo at the University Hall in Fall 2014. The movie was selected at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and received a Special Founders Prize Award at the 2007 Traverse City Festival. The movie is a documentary that includes past winners of the Miss Navajo competition and discusses the responsibilities that come with the title. The beauty pageant is not only about looks: it is also a test of Navajo language proficiency, daily tribal life, and the skills needed to become an ambassador of the Navajo Nation. The pageant has been held annually since 1952.
