  • We are pleased to announce that the UT Arlington Faculty Awards were handed out on April 24th, 2008 and the English Department fared extremely well. Professors Faris, Alaimo, Chiarello and Guertin received their previously mentioned awards there.



  • English major Dejanira Castillejos wins the Carolyn Barros Service-Learning Award for 2007-2008.


  • Professor Desiree Henderson is selected to participate in the National Humanities Center summer institute, “Forms of Being in Emily Dickinson’s Poetry.”




  • Professor Stacy Alaimo (above) is given the Chancellor's Award for Graduate Teaching.



  • English Dept. Chair Wendy Faris (above) is elected to be inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Scholars, a very select group of the top researchers in the University.

  • Professor Laura Kopchick becomes general editor for the Katherine Ann Porter Prize in Short fiction, which was formerly housed at UNT. Thus, through Laura, the UTA English Dept. will be the new home of this contest, which results in the publication of a volume of short fiction by UNT Press each year.

  • Professor Carolyn Guertin is awarded a 2008-09 Innovative Teaching Mini-Grant under the university’s QEP program for her project “Real-time Digital Education: Online Active Learning Modules.”

  • Professor Peggy Kulesz's paper, "Truth is Marching: Nineteenth Century Cultural and Textual Worlds of a Military God", won the American Literature Award at the annual meeting of the Conference of College Teachers of English in San Antonio. The paper analyzed military imagery in 19th century religious songs--particularly Julia Ward Howe's "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."

  • Department Webmaster Pathik Amin is selected to receive an Award of Excellence by the UT Arlington Career and Student Employment Service.

  • Professor Ken Roemer is awarded the Writer of the Year Award in the category of reference from the Wordcraft Circle of Native American Writers and Storytellers.
  • Barbara Chiarello is named Outstanding Faculty Advisor for 2007.

2007

  • A beaming Professor Ken Roemer is awarded the Alicia Wilkerson Smotherman Faculty Award -- given to professors whose research expertise combines with superior teaching and results in students projects surpassing ordinary class activities. Roemer is depicted in the middle with his arm around Dean Beth Wright. He is flanked by UT Arlington Trustees and patrons, Thad and Alicia Smotherman.
