Fields of Study:

UTA's English Department offers courses literature, criticism, and non-thesis degree plans may concentrate in one of these areas or combine several to form an integrated program of study. A single core course in Theory and Practice grounds the student's first year. Many graduates of the program advance to PhD candidacy or pursue professional opportunities in teaching, editing, freelance writing, hypermedia design and other fields. Many graduates of the program are teachers in Metroplex high schools, private schools, and community colleges.

Admission Process:

The application process begins with the UTA Graduate Admission Guide, available from The Graduate School, Box 19167, UTA, Arlington TX 76019. Application forms, transcripts, and Graduate Record Exam scores are sent directly to the

Graduate School. Three letters of recommendation and a sample of academic writing are sent to the English Graduate Advisor, Box 19035, UTA, Arlington TX 76019. The deadline for Fall admission is mid-June, for Spring mid-October, and for Summer mid-March. Applicants may not enroll for courses before admission without special approval from the Graduate Advisor.

Until 18 hours of graduate work in English are completed, MA-level GTAs teach under the direction of a senior mentor. Benefits include medical and life insurance. To be awarded an assistantship, a student must have been admitted unconditionally to the Graduate School and continue to make satisfactory progress toward the degree. We begin consideration of applications on 1 February for the following academic year, and continue review of applications until all places are filled. Appointment to an assistantship is contingent upon prior acceptance by the Graduate School.
