ENGL 3352 - History of British Literature II
As the course title indicates, this class is a history of British literature from roughly 1789, the date of the French Revolution, to contemporary writers. “British” will be a capacious term: although the bulk of the texts we study will be by British authors, we will also read texts written in English by African, Caribbean, and Irish writers. In addition to matters of literary tradition and style, we will explore such thematics as slavery, women’s rights, industrialization, Darwinian science, and empire.
