For both the MA and the PhD, as well as for non-degree seeking (a k a special) students, we consider four criteria for admission:
1. GPA from undergraduate and/or graduate work
2. Recent GRE scores (within the last 5 years)
3. A sample of academic writing
4. Three letters of recommendation
Prospective students must submit all required materials (i.e., official transcripts, GRE scores, a writing sample, and recommendation letters) in order for their application to be processed. All criteria are considered together, in a holistic way. Though no single factor will eliminate a prospective student from consideration, for unconditional admission, candidates must meet the standards listed below for at least three of the four criteria.
We have a limited number of enhanced graduate teaching assistantships (EGTAships) for doctoral students who are unconditionally admitted. EGTAs teach two courses a semester and receive in-state tuition rates, tuition reimbursement, and a stipend. Interested applicants should contact the Director of First Year Writing after they have been unconditionally admitted.
In addition to the admission requirements set by the Graduate School, the English Department requires all international students to have speaking, reading, and writing competence in English.
