Graduate Studies
About Graduate Studies The Department of English at UT-Arlington offers a comprehensive interdisciplinary examination of traditional literary studies in conjunction with rhetorical studies. The faculty recognizes a natural synergy between literature and rhetoric, as the study of literature does not simply involve the reading of texts written by others, but also the production of written and spoken analysis, interpretations, and arguments. The department seeks to consolidate this relationship in our courses with diverse offerings in New Materialisms, Visual Rhetoric, Animal Studies, Literature and the Environment, Film Studies and more. We also provide opportunities for graduate students in both Rhetoric and Literature to partner with the Writing Center, running tutorials for Ph. D. students across the university on the writing of dissertation proposals, conference abstracts and National Science Foundation grants. This varied experience provides graduate students with excellent training and marketable skills both for academic jobs and jobs outside the university. About Our Students Graduate students in the English Department pursue a variety of scholarly interests. Students have successfully defended theses and dissertations on topics as diverse as Magical Realism, Feminist Science Fiction, Male Androgyny in Visual Kei, Dracula films, Borges and the New Media, White Trash, Social Media Studies, Narrative Video Games and Crime Fiction, Postcolonial Literature, Young Adult Fiction, American Poets Laureate, Utopian Worlds, Women in Early Modern Drama, and Letters as Comedic Devices in Shakespeare’s plays.
