The series of detective novels that Georges Simenon wrote at white-hot speed in the early 1930s quickly became archetypal. The "early Maigrets" – I'll call them that to distinguish them from the fifty or more Maigrets that Simenon wrote after the second world war – feature Jules Maigret working more as an independent sleuth than managing his later familiar team of operatives at the Quai des Orfèvres. But the groundwork for this greatest of all detective-inspector series was laid here, in interwar Paris and in the many outlying areas where Maigret is summoned to investigate crimes.
