Burchard, Peter. Jed: The Story of a Yankee Soldier and a Southern Boy. 1960. Eau Claire, WI: E.M. Hale, 1967.
Jed, a teenage infantryman from Wisconsin, is doing picket duty in Mississippi when he finds a nine-year-old boy with a broken leg. Jed has the boy's wound splinted and escorts him home -- but inadvertently leads some other Union soldiers to the boy's farm, intent on raiding the family's winter provisions. Jed has to stand up to the raiders.
Like many Civil War juvenile novels, this one shows young people from each side meeting on the grounds of their common humanity.
