Walker, Margaret. Jubilee. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1966. In print: Mariner, 1999.
Vyry works her way out of slavery in Georgia despite the envy of her father's wife Big Missy Salina. Abandoned by the free blacksmith Randall Ware, who has fathered her children, Vyry leaves war-devastated Georgia to build a new life in Alabama with freedman Innis Brown.
Painstakingly researched family saga that also succeeds as a dramatic story of the struggles of Reconstruction and as a subtle reworking of the themes of Gone with the Wind.
