Kilian, Michael. A Grave at Glorieta. New York: Berkley, 2003.

Harry Raines, spy and amateur detective, heads off across Texas with sidekick Joseph Leahy, trying to get to New Mexico for the Glorieta campaign in time to be of use to the Union cause. Various adventures sidetrack Harry, including a puzzling and sinister murder in the desert and a whirlwind love affair. Along the way Harry dumps his old sidekick and acquires a new one, the inscrutable and lethal Jack Tantou.

One of a series where Harry Raines works his way through the battles of the Civil War much as Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon works her way through national parks. Followed by The Shiloh Sisters.
