Wright, Stephen. The Amalgamation Polka. New York: Knopf, 2006.

Liberty Fish, son of abolitionist parents (his father an upstate New York radical, his mother a radicalized South Carolina belle), joins the Union Army. He survives numerous campaigns and at last delves into the lunatic world of his maternal grandfather, a crackpot experimenter in racist eugenics.

Interesting farrago of many Civil-War-fiction themes, with an agreeable, quick-witted protagonist.
