ENGL 3300-002 Sport Literature Spring 2008 Fourth Paper
to the syllabus
Your fourth paper (due Tues 4 March) will be a five-page maximum comparison / contrast essay on Blum's Breaking Trail and Cox's Swimming to Antarctica. Try to choose a unifying theme for your essay. You might look at
- similarities and/or differences between climbing and extreme swimming, in terms of individual and team effort, athleticism, politics, and commercialization
- the texts' creation of a central narrator/character, specifically in terms of backstory and psychology
- the texts' treatment of gender and its attendant controversies in the authors' sports
That doesn't exhaust the possibilities; as in all these short paper assignments, I merely want to suggest some approaches that may make for interesting study of the texts.
