Your fifth paper (due Tues 8 April) will be a five-page maximum comparison / contrast essay on Hillenbrand's Seabiscuit and Colton's Counting Coup. You know the drill by now: choose an interesting comparative theme that seems to unite or distinguish the two texts. They are both third-person literary nonfictions, long-form sportswriting by a neutral observer (though Colton is to some extent a participant in the event he's covering, while Hillenbrand is a historian). You might look at how such stories are told, how information gets conveyed, how characters get developed. You might look at the moral tone of the books, or their myth-making, their construction or dispelling of stereotypes, their treatment of the role that sport plays in American culture(s).
