ENGL 4301 Winter 2000-01
Back to the syllabus
Take Chapter Five of the Gospel according to Luke in two versions: the Authorized Version of 1611 (King James) and a contemporary translation made in the late 20th or early 21st century. (use print sources, the Polyglot Bible, or the BlueLetter Bible).
Write a commentary explaining each difference that you see between the two versions; go verse-by-verse. The idea is to do a "thick description" of what distinguishes present-day English from the English of 400 years ago. Both versions will be translated directly from the same Greek text, so they should provide between them a pretty good benchmark of purely historical differences between one variety of English and another.
Due Tuesday 9 January.
