Dickie, Margaret. "Dickinson's Discontinuous Lyric Self." American Literature 60 (1988): 537-553. Repr. Cady & Budd. ED's "I" is not a novelistic "I"; it is "discontinuous, limited, private, hidden." Her "I" differs from one poem to the next. Much recent feminist criticism is too committed to a "social explanation" of the self to recognize ED's radical philosophy.
