Dickinson Criticism 1989
- Dobson, Joanne. Dickinson and the Strategies of Reticence: The Woman Writer in Nineteenth-Century America. Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1989.
- Garbowsky, Maryanne M. The House without the Door: A Study of Emily Dickinson and the Illness of Agoraphobia. Rutherford, NJ: Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 1989. Reads Dickinson's letters and poems for evidence of panic attacks that deepened into agoraphobia. Tends to read even her descriptions of normal states as denial of agoraphobia, but is in the main well-argued. Builds on earlier work by Cody and is seconded by McDermott.
