The Department of Psychology, and its new Center for the Study of Health and Illness, invite applications for one or more faculty positions at the assistant (tenure stream) or associate or full professor level (with tenure) effective Fall 2009. The Department is searching for faculty with research and teaching interests in: traditional or applied areas of cognitive psychology or cognitive neuroscience; psychometrics; and health and behavior (with emphasis on aging, stress, pain, or chronic illness). Broadly defined, the Department is focused on both basic and applied aspects of psychology, with more specific interests in understanding how interpersonal, environmental and biological processes affect mood, behavior, and/or health-related aspects of stress, pain and health behavior. Currently, faculty are engaged in research and teaching in industrial/organizational psychology, social and personality psychology, cognitive psychology, and neuroscience, as well as in health psychology. The Department is seeking to fill up to four positions (three are already officially approved for funding), and is particularly interested in applicants whose research interests expand on existing strengths in the Department, and link psychological, social, developmental, and physiological processes. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, or a health-related field. A health psychology research focus is preferred but not essential. Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, conducting and publishing research, supervising student research, and participating in service activities. Candidates will be expected to secure funding to support their research and should demonstrate potential for grant support. The Department offers a Ph.D. in Psychology, with three specialty areas: Health Psychology, General Experimental Psychology, and Industrial/Organizational Psychology. The new Center for the Study of Health and Illness was developed to coordinate and stimulate clinical research and community-based education and prevention efforts pertaining to the maintenance of good health and to the etiology, treatment and management of illnesses. Interests include behavioral medicine, integrative medicine, worksite health promotion, and disease or symptom management. The Center was established, in part, as a response to changes in major health problems and in health care, as well as renewed interest in prevention and multidisciplinary clinical research. For many reasons, social, economic and behavioral research have become increasingly important in medicine and health care and the primary focus of the Center is on the integration of these social and biobehavioral sciences with more traditional biological sciences and chemistry at the interface with biomedical research. In addition, illness/health issues associated with an aging population are of considerable interest.
The Department and Center strongly encourage interdisciplinary research, and have active intra-institutional collaborations with the Departments of Biology, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Kinesiology, Biomedical Engineering and the School of Nursing, as well as inter-institutional collaborations with The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and The University of Texas at Dallas. All three Universities are located in the growing Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex region of North Central Texas. Some of the active research includes collaboration between UT-Arlington and these other two UT-System institutions, such as the following: UT Southwestern's Eugene McDermott Center for Pain Management, the Spine Care Center of Excellence, The Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Departments of Orthopedic Surgery, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry; UT Dallas' Institute for Biomedical Science and Technology, the Sickle Cell Disease Research Center of Excellence, and the Brain-Behavior Institute. Moreover, all three institutions share the New Advanced Imaging Resource Center (equipped with 3 and 7 Telsa imaging systems). There is also active ongoing clinical research with other institutions in the area, such as Baylor Medical Center, Baylor Dental School, Moncrief Cancer Center, and University of North Texas Health Science Center, Fort Worth. The University of Texas at Arlington offers competitive salaries and benefits. Send curriculum vitae, statement of teaching and research interests, preprints/reprints and three letters of recommendation to: Chair, Psychology Search Committee, Department of Psychology, The University of Texas at Arlington, 501 South Nedderman Drive, Box 19528, Arlington, TX 76019.
