Assistant Dean of the Honors College

The Honors College of the University of Texas at Arlington invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Dean. The search is open to current employees of UT Arlington. This is a part-time, 12-month (approximately 15 hours per week) professional position; with agreement of the chair and/or dean of the candidate's home unit, the position can be held concurrent with other responsibilities in his/her current academic department.

Applicants should hold a graduate degree in an academic discipline represented at UT Arlington, and must have excellent spoken and written communication skills. Experience in university teaching, academic advising, and knowledge of UT Arlington procedures and processes (including facility with MyMav) will be a plus. This is an excellent opportunity for lecturers, adjunct faculty, and instructors who seek to acquire a broad range of higher education administrative experience. The College of Education at the University of Texas at Arlington and the South West Center for Mind, Brain and Education (MBE) are building a team of committed researchers who wish to play an active role in research, teaching and community service. We are seeking applicants for a tenure track position at the level of assistant professor. Applicants should have a Ph.D. or Ed.D., and should have evidence of potential for high quality research. ABD may be considered.

MBE is a collaborative effort between the cognitive sciences, neuroscience and education where researchers and educators are developing and using MBE as a paradigm to address educational problems in the community and beyond. The mission of the Southwest Center for Mind, Brain, and Education is to facilitate collaborative relationships between educators, policy makers, and researchers in the cognitive and developmental sciences. The Center seeks to identify and support promising research agendas at the intersection of mind, brain and education. The Center advances educational research by profiting from the neuro and cognitive sciences, integrating the insight of educational practitioners in defining promising research directions and building strong partnerships with policy makers and the business community.

The successful candidate must be able to work in a collaborative environment where his or her participation will contribute to the goals established by the SW Center for MBE. Although research expertise is not required in all three domains, the candidate must demonstrate a corpus of work bridging two of the three areas and demonstrate comfort in the methodological and epistemological issues that arise when attempting to bridge the three domains. Overall the successful candidate will:

• Assist in the development of a new Masters Program in MBE.

• Take part in building and shaping a collaborative relationship between local school districts and research programs. This association is taking shape in an initiative between UT Arlington and local communities in the form of a Research Schools Project. Together researchers, educators, and policy makers work collaboratively to define and solve educational challenges

• Develop a research agenda that helps define MBE as a growing and promising discipline. The Research Schools Project can provide an important and relevant context for defining and executing research agendas

• Over the next two to three years assume a dominant role in the journal of the International Mind, Brain and Education Society.

Candidates should hold an earned doctorate in Social Studies, Social Studies Education, Geography, History or a related field. A background in Social Studies education is required. Candidates should have publications related to their field. Secondary Geography teaching experience is preferred.

The primary mission will be to teach Geography courses that will prepare future secondary educators to obtain 8-12 Social Studies certification and teach geography in Texas secondary classrooms. Courses offered will include basic cultural and world geography and should include advanced offerings in cultural, economic or regional geography. It will be beneficial if candidates can teach undergraduate and graduate courses in cartography or the geography of areas bordering the Atlantic basin. The candidate will partner with local secondary educators to promote college readiness in social studies content in secondary and university settings. The candidate may also be expected to develop a course in social studies pedagogy.

Undergraduate studies within the Department of Kinesiology are organized around three strong academic programs which include Exercise Science, Athletic Training, and Physical Education Pedagogy. At the graduate level, the Master of Science degree in Physiology of Exercise is offered. The Department maintains over 10,000 sq ft of laboratory space including a neuromuscular, metabolic, blood chemistry, athletic training, biomechanics, data analysis, two body composition, and three cardiopulmonary laboratories. In addition, there are numerous opportunities for collaborative research within the Metroplex including The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, University of North Texas Health Science Center, Cooper Institute, Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine, Texas Metroplex Institute for Sports Medicine and Orthopedics, and Ben Hogan Sports Therapy Institute.

The School of Urban and Public Affairs (SUPA) at the University of Texas at Arlington is seeking to expand its faculty in public administration. We intend to hire two to three highly qualified individuals at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to begin Fall 2009.

We specifically seek candidates with demonstrated research expertise and who have teaching interests in at least one of the following areas:

1. Human Resources & Personnel Management, including public personnel systems, current public personnel management issues, strategic human resources administration, and employee rights and labor relations.

2. Public Budgeting & Financial Management, including knowledge of fiscal federalism, state and local government financing, and governmental and nonprofit accounting.

3. Nonprofit Management, including personnel, board management, fiduciary responsibilities, fundraising, and grant administration.

Preference will be given to candidates who have an established research record with interest in working in a multidisciplinary environment as well as a commitment to community service. Candidates able to demonstrate strong interest in teaching quantitative analysis and/or administrative law courses will be particularly welcome. A Ph.D. in Public Administration is strongly preferred. ABDs may be considered if doctoral degree is to be conferred before the effective date of appointment.

The School offers excellent teaching and research support, and its location in the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area provides an ideal urban laboratory for research and community service. Qualifications: Required are an MSW and a Ph.D. in social work or related field; a minimum two years BSW or post MSW experience in a human service agency or institution; candidate must be bi-lingual and bi-literate in Spanish and English. Preferred are prior experience with social work doctoral education; academic administrative experience; ability to teach Distance Education and/or online courses; and, familiarity with higher education and social work in Mexico.

Rank and Salary: Position is tenure-track, Assistant Professor or higher. Appointment as Associate Professor or Professor will be with tenure contingent upon higher education experience, scholarship, and research record.
