Section 9: International Hires
Instructions for New International Employees
- Obtain a job offer letter from the hiring department (See sample letter below).
- Take the job offer and your immigration documents to the Payroll Services Office located in the Wetsel Building, Suite 207 and request a State of Texas Comptroller's ID Number.
- Take the form indicating your Comptroller's ID Number and your offer letter to the Office of International Education, where you should complete the Payment Request Form and Request for a Social Security Letter. Return to the Office of International Education for your Social Security Letter on the date specified by the OIE.
- No earlier than one month after the start date on your I-20 or DS-2019, go to the Social Security Administration Office
with the following documents:
- Job offer
- Social Security letter prepared by the Office of International Education
- Immigration documents: Passport, I-20 or DS-2019, I-94 card
After you complete the application form available at the SSA Office, the Officer will ask to see your letter from your school, your job offer, and all of your immigration documents. The Officer will then check your personal information against the Immigration Service database. If there is no information in the database, or if there is incorrect information, the Officer will ask you to return to your International Office for help.
If your application is accepted, you will receive your Social Security Card in the mail. - When you receive your Social Security Card, take it to the Office of Human Resources in the Wetsel Building and to the Office of International Education so it can be copied for your file.
- Your Social Security Card is an important document and should be kept in a safe place with your other important documents. To protect yourself against identity theft, it should not be carried in your wallet, and your Social Security Number should not be shared with anyone unless there is a valid reason to do so.
