Environmental and Earth Sciences

AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON

Master‘s Degree, Professional Option

This option is designed for full-time students seeking preparation to enter the workforce in the private sector and governmental positions. Instead of a thesis, students are required to participate in a mentoring program, take a course in project economics, work as an intern or in a part time job in the Environmental Science Profession, and participate in course experiences involving business ethics, teamwork, a small research project, and communication. The Professional Option requires completion of 38 hours of course work, including 12 hours of hours of core courses in Environmental and Earth Sciences; 9 hours of formal course electives concentrated in one of the following units: Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Civil and Environmental Engineering, or Urban and Public Affairs; and 6 hours of additional course electives. The student's program of core and elective courses is designed in consultation with a faculty advisor to meet the students career and professional goals, taking into account their previous background and the need for interdisciplinary training to solve environmental problems. Students must also demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication, which may be done by completing independent study or research projects supervised by a faculty member.
