 on the Texas Brand of Justice: The 
 Struggle to Adopt and Implement the Fair Defense 
 Act (and A Few Remaining Challenges)"\n

 Hailed 
 by legal experts as the most important 
 piece of indigent defense legislation in the 
 country in the last quarter century, the Texas 
 Fair Defense Act provided legal protections 
 to indigent defendants charged in criminal 
 matters by providing access to qualified and 
 timely appointment of counsel. This talk will 
 reflect on the struggle to adopt Fair Defense 
 Act, the impact the Act has had on justice 
 in Texas, and the work that remains to be done 
 to insure justice is done in criminal matters.

 Michael K. Moore, Ph.D. is an Associate 
 Professor-Political Science, is Senior Vice 
 Provost and is Dean of Undergraduate Studies-Provost 
 Office at the University of Texas 
 at Arlington. He holds a B.A. in Political Science 
 from Washburn University of Topeka and 
 his M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from 
 the University of Nebraska. His research interests 
 include research interests include congressional 
 and legislative politics, research 
 methods, political participation and behavior, 
 American politics, and the policy making process. 
 He has also has a research interest in 
 indigent criminal defense issues. \n
 \n
 In July 
 of 2012 Moore received the Michael K. Moore 
 Award for Research and Writing in the Area of 
 Indigent Defense during the State Bar of Texas' 
 annual Advanced Criminal Law Course in San 
 Antonio. This award was created to recognize 
 15 years of service on the Committee on Legal 
 Services to the Poor in Criminal Matters, 
 during which he worked without compensation 
 to produce pivotal research and writing that 
 helped provide low-income residents in Texas 
 with proper legal representation. \n

 The program 
 will be followed by a dessert reception.
