DESCRIPTION:
 \n
 Friends of the Library meeting\n
 November 16,
 2012\n
 7:30pm\n
 Central Library Sixth Floor parlor\n
 \n
 Elzie
 D. Odom, the City of Arlington's
first African American mayor and the descendant
of a slave who settled in Texas shortly
after the Civil War, has written a memoir to
serve as a "compilation of his life, spanning
eight decades through key milestones in our
 nation's history." \n
 \n
 Born in Shankleville in
southeast Texas, Odom has many "firsts" to
his name. He was the first black elected school
board official in Orange County, Texas, and
helped with the desegregation process; he was
the first African American postal inspector
in the State of Texas, at that time one of
only five in the nation, and he was the first
black to serve on the Arlington City Council,
in 1990. He served as mayor from 1997 to 2003.
