Not Just for Students with Disabilities: Using Universal Design
(Seminars/Workshops)

Eighteen percent of Americans have disabilities, making students with disabilities one of the largest minorities on college campuses. This session will begin with an introduction to the burgeoning field of disability studies, and will then explore the increasingly diverse population of students with disabilities, which ranges from people with autism and traumatic brain injury to those with chronic illnesses and more familiar mobility or sensory impairments. The session will conclude with a discussion of universal design in teaching: an inclusive approach that not only makes classrooms more accessible students with disabilities but which can also help all students learn better.

Sarah F. Rose, Ph.D.: Director of the Minor in Disability Studies and Assistant Professor of History, University of Texas at Arlington

Penny Acrey, L.M.S.W.: Director of the Office for Students with Disabilities, University of Texas at Arlington

Gina Ceylan, M.S.: Ph.D. student in Science Education, University of Missouri
