Convergent research has shown that teachers who work with bilingual and English as a second language (ESL) students need to have not only a thorough understanding of the population they teach and the challenges they may face in the classroom, but that they also need to understand how they can, through their instruction, meet the diverse needs of their students in the classroom.

As the Project Director of UTA's G-Force Program, I've had the privilege of working with college students who have a desire to make a difference in the lives of prospective first-generation college students. Our goal for this program is two-fold. On the one hand, we aim to reduce the dropout rate among minority/underserved high school students and to prepare these first-generation students for post-secondary education. On the other hand, we seek to develop a college-going culture at the high school campuses by working closely with all students and their parents.
