IRB Workshop

Description

Monday, June 23 10:45 am -12:45 pm

Most university linguists embarking upon projects in communities need approval from their Institutional Review Board (IRB) in order to move forward with their research. This two-hour workshop will give an overview of the IRB system specifically tailored for documentary researchers, covering guiding principles and offering concrete practical advice to help you interact constructively with your IRB. We will talk about the history and administration of IRB oversight, explore its relation to disciplinary ethics, and highlight the special challenges for IRB review that arise in the context of fieldwork and collaborative research. Those looking ahead to particular projects in the near future are especially encouraged to bring their questions for the discussion period.
