Description

Workshop: Sociolinguistic Documentation

This workshop will provide an overview of the methods used by sociolinguists – specifically those used in studies of variation and change – to collect data. Topics covered will include study design, sociolinguistic field methods, fieldwork ethics, transcription and coding practices, and types of data analysis. Using data from a longitudinal panel study of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) we will cover some of the principal issues that are discussed in sociolinguistic fieldwork such as (1) interviewer effects (including the “observer’s paradox”), (2) interview types, and (3) how field methods affect data.
