Dr. Donald Butler received his B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science: Physics Option from the University of Toronto (1980) and his M.S. (1981) and Ph.D. (1986) from the University of Rochester in Electrical Engineering. He performed his graduate research at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics investigating the nonequilibrium behavior of superconductor thin films in response to picosecond electrical and optical excitations. He continued his graduate research as a Research Associate in 1986. In 1987, he joined the Electrical Engineering Department at Southern Methodist University as an Assistant Professor. In 1993, he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor and Professor in 2001. He joined the faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington in 2002. His current research is focused on microsensors, uncooled infrared detectors, polymer nanocomposites, and other microelectromechanical devices (MEMS). He has published more than 160 journal articles and conference presentations and holds 4 patents with 3 additional patents pending. Dr. Butler is a senior member of the IEEE, and member of the Optical Society of America. He is active in the IEEE. He has served in various positions for the IEEE. He is a recipient of the IEEE Third Millennium Medal and other IEEE service awards. He was an Electron Device Society Distinguished Lecturer (2000-2005). He was a topical editor for Applied Optics/Optical Technology & Biomedical Optics (2003-2009).
