Dean Kamen
Lonestar Auditorium, Maverick Activities Center
550 W. Nedderman Drive
Mr. Kamen
is an inventor, physicist and entrepreneur who has dedicated his life to
developing technologies that help people lead better lives. Some notable
breakthrough medical devices include the HomeChoice® portable
dialysis machine, and the Independence® IBOT® 4000 Mobility System,
a sophisticated mobility aid, developed for Johnson & Johnson. Kamen
is also widely recognized as the inventor of the Segway® Human
Transporter, which was designed to provide a clean alternative for short
distance travel and enhance people's productivity. One of his newest
projects is a water purification system that is being designed to help
provide clean drinking water to the estimated 1.1 billion of people in
the world who lack access to clean water. He is also the founder of FIRST
(For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a foundation
that hosts competitions and outreach activities for youth and technology.
Mr. Kamen received the Heinz Award in Technology, the Economy and
Employment (1998), the National Medal of Technology from President Clinton
(2000), the Lemelson-MIT Prize (2002), and numerous honorary
degrees. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and
was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2005.

GERD Monitor Wins Italian Tech Award
The Batteryless Endoluminal
Sensing Telemeter created by Electrical Engineering Professor J.-C. Chiao
and his collaborators at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas
received an award presented by Well-Tech, an Italian organization
dedicated to the research and design of innovative and sustainable
systems and technologies and their transfer to the Italian industrial
system. “This is much better than receiving that ‘Wacky Innovation’ award
for our prototype in 2007,” said Dr. Chiao.
Magnetic Nanodisks Speed Analysis of Biochemicals
Materials Science &
Engineering's Dr. Yaowu Hao is developing a new tool for professionals in
biological and biomedical research fields to quickly and accurately
identify the chemical makeup of biological samples. The process involves
the introduction of magnetic nanodisks that attract the various organic
molecules in the sample. Details
Trust-based Mechanisms Build Cooperative Control for
Networks
Dr. Frank Lewis at the
Automation & Robotics Research Institute is developing methods to
