Student FAQs

  1. How do I find out the daily schedule and assignments for our class?

See the  web page for course information:

www.uta.edu/faculty/kulesz

From the main page, you may click on links to your class web page. On your course page, you will find links for schedule, policies, assignments, and extra material/handouts.

  1. How do I get class notes if I miss a class?

You will need to contact a classmate to get class notes. Dr. Kulesz does not hand out copies of notes, nor will she repeat her lecture or the information missed over the phone or by email. You are always encouraged to see her during office hours to go over material you have missed or clarification of material you do not understand.

  1. How can I keep track of my grade average?

In the course policies you will find information on how your grade is calculated using percentages for each assignment category. If you would like a report of your current grade average in the course, see Dr. Kulesz during office hours. She does not keep her gradebook with her in class.

  1. How do I make up class work or quizzes I have missed due to illness or other absences?

Missed work may not be made up regardless of the reason for absence. You will have some opportunities to replace a quiz grade with an extra credit assignment. For information on how to do this, see the EXTRA CREDIT link on the first screen of Dr. Kulesz’s web page.

  1. How do I earn extra credit in the class?

There is no extra credit in the traditional sense. You may, however, replace a missed or low quiz grade with an extra credit assignment. For information on how to do this, see the EXTRA CREDIT link on the first screen of Dr. Kulesz’s web page.

  1. What do I do if I need to miss a class because of a doctor’s appointment, court date, family illness or other personal matter?

I do not differentiate among absences. You should schedule appointments for a time that does not conflict with class.

  1. Should I bring a doctor’s note, a hospital bill, or other medical documentation to have my absence excused?

NO! I do not differentiate between excused and unexcused absences. If you feel you have an unusual circumstance, you are encouraged to discuss this with me in private. However, absences do matter and do count.

  1. What if I have a sick family member or death in the family? Surely these won’t count as absences?

All absences count. You should save them for emergency situations. I recognize the importance of supporting your family during difficult times. If you feel you have an unusual circumstance, you are encouraged to discuss this with me in private. However, absences do matter and do count.

  1. I have always made As in English, why am I making a lower grade in your course?

If you are new to the English major, you may, for the first time, be evaluated using more demanding expectations and requirements. If you are used to making grammar and mechanical errors with only minimum deductions, you have been allowed to repeat poor writing practices that are unacceptable in the professions of English studies. Additionally, many students find that the formulaic writing they have practiced in past classes is not sophisticated enough to earn exceptional scores in the English major.  A student’s ability to think and write critically is essential and expected of all students in the English major.

  1. I don't agree with or understand the grade I received on an assignment. What should I do?

First of all you should wait 24 hours before discussing the issue with me. During that time you should review the marks and comments on the assignment carefully, fairly, and thoughtfully. You should write down specific concerns or questions about the assignment grade and bring them to me in my office. If you can't come during regular office hours, email me for an appointment. You should not try to talk to me about this before, during, or after class. Your grade issues are private and neither you nor I want an audience when we discuss these matters.

  1. I have missed many classes, and I am behind in my class work. Can I receive an incomplete and make up this work next semester?

No. Incompletes are given rarely and only to students who have maintained attendance and course work up until the end of the semester. Students who are given incomplete usually have only one or two assignments to complete.

Students who have excessive absences or who are behind in course work, should consider dropping the class by the last withdrawal date.

Before dropping the course, you should come and talk to me about your options.

  1. How do I locate a library reserve item?

Go to the library homepage and locate library reserves under the services menu. If asked for a password enter your course number.
