ADVISING

My name is Miriam Byrd, and I am the undergraduate advisor for the Department of Philosophy and Humanities at the University of Texas at Arlington.  My office hours for spring semester are W 11-3 and F 11-2.  Please schedule an appointment with me in advance in order to make sure that I will be available when you arrive.  My email address is mbyrd@omega.uta.edu.  Please give me your student identification number and briefly explain your reason for meeting with me.  Also, many advising matters may be handled through email.

In addition to speaking to me about general advising matters, students interested in the Language, Mind, Cognition option should contact Denny Bradshaw, students interested in applying to law school should contact Keith Burgess-Jackson (see his advice to pre-law students ), and students interested in applying to graduate school in philosophy should contact Charles Nussbaum.

Below I have gathered a list of frequently asked questions and have provided answers that I hope will be helpful to you.  Feel free to contact me for further explanation or concerning other questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the requirements for a philosophy degree according to the Fall 2007 catalogue?

See  http://www.uta.edu/catalog/departments/liberalarts/philosophy

Should I change the requirement term for my philosophy degree to Fall 2007?

In the Fall 2007 catalogue the requirements for the Pre-Professional Track have changed.  Prior to this semester, the degree required 128 hours and students were required to take six hours from the following:  CLAS 2307, CLAS 3310, CLAS 3320, HIST 2301, HIST 2302, PHIL 3302, or PHIL 3304.  In the new catalogue, however, a Pre-Professional Track degree requires only 120 hours, and the six hours of additional history courses have been dropped.  Changing the requirement term for your philosophy major does not alter the requirement term for a second major or for the policy section of the catalogue, so if making this change would benefit you, please contact me with your request.

How can I monitor my progress toward my degree?

I have created forms designed to explain the requirements for your degree and help you keep track of your progress toward meeting them.

When should I discuss my progress toward my degree with the departmental advisor?

I recommend coming in for the initial degree plan check by the first semester of your junior year.

How do I withdraw from a class after the drop/add period?

Make an appointment to see me during office hours and make sure that you bring the course number for the class you wish to drop.  We will briefly discuss your decision, and if you decide to drop, you will sign a form stating that you understand the consequences of withdrawing from the course.  ** U.T. Arlington’s policy on Ws pursuant to SB1231 passed by the Texas Legislature:  “Effective immediately, all students admitted to UTA prior to Fall 2007 and transfer students admitted who began their college work prior to Fall 2007 will not have a limit on the number of drops throughout their academic career.  Freshman, defined as a student who enrolls in a public institution of higher education as a first-time freshman in Fall 2007 or later will be limited to six dropped courses during the course of their academic career.  This applies to UTA course work and course work completed at other Texas public institutions.”  Guidelines for exceptions to this rule are still being developed and will be posted when available.

How and when do I apply for graduation?

I suggest applying at the beginning of your senior year.  Before filing, check with me in order to make sure that you will be eligible to graduate – the filing fee is non-refundable and you will lose your money if the application is declined.  File electronically at http://www3.uta.edu/registrar/graduation.asp.
