Highlights of the 2010-2011 percussion year at UTA!

The percussion ensemble became nationally recognized this fall being invited to premier California composer Daniel Kessner’s “Symphony.” This 18-minute “tour de force” was recorded by the ensemble and published by “Marimba productions.” Dr. Varner commissioned UTArlington percussionist Jesus Martinez to compose for the ensemble and his composition “Memories” was performed and published by C. Alan Publications.

The ensemble toured Texas performing at Mesquite Poteet, Coppell, Mansfield, and Garland Lakeview Centennial High Schools. In October nationally acknowledged Kennan Wylie presented a clinic on percussion education and composer David Hall also visited with a clinic on his composition “Escape Velocity.”

The African ensemble was busy presenting a series of unique pieces from Liberia, Sierran Leone, and Ghana. Spring included a visit from marimba master Pius Cheung who performed and gave an insightful clinic. Dual percussion ensemble performances featured works prepared by a number of student leaders from the ensemble. In April the Samba Band led the “Parade of Flags across campus for annual Internaitional Week.

Student recitals are a large part of the program and Performance Major Andrew Talley presented a recital along with Jazz Studies percussionists Jaime Reyes’, Graduate recital and Ryan Seward’s Undergraduate recital.

Jesus Martinez distiguished himself by presenting recitals in both Fall and Spring Semester as well as a composition recital in the fall. He was awarded the “presidents Award” in the “ACE’s” Academic Celebration of Excellence competition. At the departmental Awards Ceremony Martinez received the prestigious Undergraduate Music Major of the year award.
