Description of Course Content:


This course introduces students to the concepts and practices of project management and their importance to improving the success of information technology projects. Distinct aspects or characteristics of IT projects which cause these projects to behave differently in the corporate world than do other, non-technical, projects will be discussed.

 

 

Student Learning Outcomes:

 

  1. The student will be able to describe the key competencies of a project manager.
  2. The student will be able to identify the key components of a project and elaborate these in plan documentation.
  3. The student will be able to discuss available cost and effort estimation techniques and their appropriate application.
  4. The student will be able to develop a work breakdown structure, project schedule, and identify key milestones.
  5. The student will be able to describe risk management activities and define the components of a risk management plan.
  6. The student will be able to track project progress by monitoring compliance of the team and software metrics.
  7. The student will be able to apply the key decisions in selecting a development life cycle and define the accompanying documentation.
  8. The student will be able to discuss the issues facing software development project success and suggest management techniques to address these issues.

 

Requirements: 

INSY 5341. ANALYSIS AND DESIGN (3-0)
Analysis and design phase of systems development life cycle. Topics include systems survey, functional specification, interface specification, data design, program design, system testing, and implementation.
Prerequisite: INSY 5335

Grading Policy:

 

A grade of incomplete will only be given under extraordinary unforeseen circumstances at the instructor’s discretion and must be approved prior to the end of the course.  Poor performance, absences, forgetting to drop, or travel are not considered sufficient grounds for incompletes.  Instructors are not obligated to give "incomplete" grades.  To receive an incomplete, 95% of the course must have been completed.

 

Exams

 

There will be three exams (two exams and a final).  There will be no makeup exams under any circumstances.

 

Final Exam

 

The final exam will be comprehensive and mandatory.

Project: Details of the project will be given in class. You will be working with one of your classmates on the project.

Attendance Policy: 

 

Class attendance is required as well as class participation.  The enrollment is small enough that I will know when students are in attendance.  Come to class prepared to talk about the assigned material for that evening.

 

Drop Policy: 

 

We will follow the UTA drop policy.

Cheating is not acceptable and will be handled in accordance with the policy and procedures of the University of Texas at Arlington.  If a student is caught cheating, he/she will receive a 0 for that quiz/assignment.
