Text : Introduction to Real Analysis, 3rd edition

           Robert Bartle and Donald Sherbert

           ISBN: 0-471-32148-6
Learning Outcomes

This course will enable students to think critically about statements in analysis involving the real number system, sequences, limits, and continuity, to determine whether such statements are true or false, and to prove their conclusions through correct and rigorous mathematical arguments.

Course Outline
Foundational Material – (1.1, 1.3)

The Real Number System -- (2.1 – 2.4)

Sequences and Series -- (3.1 – 3.6)

Limits -- (4.1 – 4.3)

Continuity -- (5.1 – 5.4)
Course Format

Except on testing days, classes will involve interactive work with classmates on True/False questions and Discovery Exercises in which we will develop the major concepts, check conceptual and practical understanding, and present ideas and solutions to the class.

Homework

Homework will be given each week. Selected problems from the homework will be handed in as group work, to be written up and handed in according to the guidelines below. The remaining homework problems will not be collected. These should be worked out with your group or on your own to help you learn the material and prepare for the exams. Office hours are scheduled for you to obtain help on these problems. Discuss your work often with your peers and keep a neatly-written folder of your solutions to all the homework problems so that you will be well-prepared for the exams. Group homework is accepted only on or before the class period in which it is due.

Exams

Four tests and a final exam will be designed to determine whether you have mastered the material in the assigned homework (including group homework and homework that is not collected). A missed exam cannot be made up. One lowest test score will be dropped.

Instructions for Group Homework

·        Hand in one set of solutions, prepared by the whole group.

·        All members of the group must work with the group on all the problems.

·        The written solutions must be read and agreed upon by each group member.

·        Groups are expected to hold at least three meetings, one hour or more in length, for each group assignment. More time will probably be necessary.

·        Cover page:

o        Write the name of each group member clearly.

o        Each group member must sign below his or her name.

o        The signature indicates that the group member has worked on each problem with the group and agrees with the final solution.

o        Write down the dates and the beginning and ending times of each group meeting and list the group members that were present at each meeting.

·        Write out the complete problem before presenting the solution.

·        Work must be neat and clearly legible. Corrections should be made neatly with clean erasures or white-out.

·        Include all steps and justifications that cannot be seen easily without writing them down.

·        Write on one side of the paper only.

·        Trim the edges from paper torn from a spiral notebook.

·        Staple all pages in the upper left corner.

Grading
Your work will be graded on correctness, completeness, and clarity.

Three Best (out of 4) Test Scores:          60% (20% each)

       Homework:                                          10%

       Final Exam:                                        30%

A course average of at least 90% guarantees an A, at least 80% a B, at least 70% a C, and at least 60% a D.
