Introduction to Service
This is an interactive workshop, structured to introduce students to the idea that service (e.g., community service or volunteering) can be tied to everyday activities. Students will be asked to carry out a short period of impromptu service, then they will process their actions in small group discussions.
Careers in Service: Help Starts Here
This career exploration workshop will focus on careers in social work and related fields (e.g., voluntarism, humanitarian aid, public administration, advocacy, lobbying, and public, community, and labor organizing). Examples of service professionals who have made a difference will be presented in a human interest story format. Educational requirements, work roles, aptitudes, and salary ranges of typical positions in these fields will be discussed, as presented in a shorter form as part of a career panel.
Social Problems in the News: Checking the Facts
Certain social problems have been highlighted recently in the media, often associated with political campaigns or traumatic incidents in the community. This interactive workshop will examine a few of them with the goal of enhancing students' critical thinking skills and knowledge of current evidence base on such problems as sexual abuse, poverty, the Internet, child safety, and school violence.
