Skeletons, Criminals, and Revolutionaries: The Art of José Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913)
The Mexican engraver José Guadalupe Posada illustrated all aspects of Mexican life at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth. His pictures, printed on broadsides (large sheets of newsprint) that circulated cheaply among every day Mexicans, represented sensational crimes, fantastic creatures, political figures and social types. In representing these realities, Posada became one of modern Mexico’s most foundational and internationally recognized artists. This presentation/ slide show is an introduction to Posada and his world.
