Applied Psychological Measurement
Applied psychological measurement deals with quantification of data from people. It is in particularly wide use in advertising and medicine. For example, I have spent the last three years evaluating psychiatric inventories designed to measure depression. A typical study compared the symptoms of depressed women who had recently given birth with equally depressed women who had not recently had a baby. In the past, I have worked with advertising agencies to help gauge reactions to advertisements and with ophthalmologists to assess vision loss in patients suffering from a fairly common cause of blindness, glaucoma. Applied psychological measurement involves psychometrics, the construction of psychological scales, and related issues. In medical settings, it is also part of biometrics, which includes such topics as the assessment of the effectiveness of drugs. NOTE: This talk is designed to last for one hour.
