Elephants, Intelligence, and Elmer’s Glue: Strategies for Success in College
This interactive presentation will describe the importance of setting small goals in order to achieve long-term goals (you can eat an elephant one bite at a time). The myth of high levels of intelligence (not how smart you are, but how you are smart) as being essential for completing a college degree will be countered by the impact of perseverance (gluing yourself in the chair and doing the work). This presentation could be modified for ages 8 to 18.
Cultural Issues in the Global Epidemic of HIV/AIDS
For every statistic in the HIV/AIDS epidemic, there is a person…a human being with a family, a home, and a story. This presentation will describe the effects of gender roles, stigma, and cultural values on prevention and treatment of HIV worldwide. Exemplars from Tanzania, Dominican Republic, and Texas will be used to emphasize the human aspect of the epidemic. Presentation more suited for high school students.
