Using Historical Maps as Keys to the Past
Maps made in earlier times are often discarded when they become obsolete, but they have many uses for historians researching the past. Old maps can tell us much about the past and the people who lived in times past. These maps have many practical uses. They can also shed light on past environments--including the places where we live, work, and vacation.
History and Film
Popular films like JFK, Titanic, and Pearl Harbor attempt to depict historical events--but how accurately do they do this? Historians now study film to determine what happened when history is made into movies. Using selections from popular films now available on DVD, we can compare what historians know about the past with what filmmakers create on the screen--and determine what is lost and what is gained when history becomes cinema.
