What’s Political Science Got To Do With The Dallas Cowboys? Exploring the Discipline and Its Career Options
This interactive presentation is intended to: 1) introduce high school students to the study and practice of political science; 2) present a timely and local case study of an issue currently under research—the politics of economic development of the Dallas Cowboys stadium project; and 3) explore career options in the public service sector. The presentation will begin with a short, interactive question and answer session to define the field and recalibrate common misconceptions about what political scientists do and do not study and practice. Next, the presentation will explore what modern political scientists teach and research by examining the case of building a football stadium for a professional sports team in Arlington, Texas. The presentation concludes with a discussion of the vast array of options for students who want to study political science at the university-level and then seek practitioner careers in the public sector. NOTE: This session requires at least 45 minutes, and it can be tailored to last longer, if needed.
