Current research includes: 1) tectonics and structure of southern Mexico and Central America; and 2) study of short term geochemical and mineralogical changes in soil related to engineering problems and surface detection of hydrocarbons. In southern Mexico, research work is concentrating on the Orizaba Fault zone and the western margin of the Yucatan Block, which is comprised of dextral strike slip faults with Neogene displacements. Methane induced geochemical changes in soil over landfills is similar to those that occur over petroleum reservoirs, and both can be detected by changes in magnetic susceptibility.
