Improving our country’s human capital provides not only individual economic benefits but crucial public benefits as well. College and university faculty are needed to help produce the highly educated workforce that American businesses and industries will need if they are to compete in an age dominated by information rather than manufacturing. Increasingly, Americans will need graduate and professional degrees to get their first job and advance in their careers. Indeed, a master’s degree is now the entry-level requirement for many professions. While we are justifiably proud of the accomplishments of our alumni and students, several challenges must be accepted if we are to continue to grow and promote excellence in graduate research and scholarship. The financial challenges graduate students face are greater now than ever before. The rising costs of tuition, basic health insurance, books, journals, and living expenses have forced many students to pursue their degrees part-time as they work outside the academic community to support their families and themselves. This development adversely effects their professional and intellectual development and increases the time needed to earn their degrees. As a result, many promising graduate students fail to complete their degrees, depriving our university and our society of the full benefit of their capabilities. By investing in The Graduate Dean’s Excellence Fund, your gift of any amount, combined with contributions from others, will help support the educational needs of our graduate students. Without alumni and private support, graduate student debt would increase dramatically, rendering a graduate education out of reach for many students. Combined unrestricted gifts will primarily fund student travel, research, or Graduate School Fellowships. Graduate student travel support is necessary as the students research may lead them to field work abroad or to world renown libraries. Participation in The Graduate Dean’s Excellence Fund is essential and vital to the growth and success of UTA’s Graduate School. Contacts
