Case for Support
The nation’s ninth largest metropolitan area is an ideal setting for programs that focus on urban policy and planning. The University of Texas at Arlington’s School of Urban and Public Affairs capitalizes on the Dallas-Fort Worth region’s vast laboratory of more than 200 cities and 5 million people by offering rich opportunities for student projects, internships and employment.
Growth
SUPA offers five graduate programs: the Master of Arts in Urban Affairs, the Master of City and Regional Planning, the Master of Public Administration, the Master of Interdisciplinary Studies, the Ph.D. in Urban and Public Administration and the Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Public Policy. In addition, the school participates in dual-degree graduate programs with many of UT Arlington’s other schools and colleges. It also offers seven certificate programs and, for undergraduates, three minor fields of study. In addition, graduate and undergraduate students can shoose an Interdisciplinary Studies program where they, with close guidance from advisors, can tailor programs to fit their particular academic and career needs.
Excellence
Since its founding in 1967 as the Institute of Urban Studies, SUPA has established a record of excellence.
- The school is one of only a handful in the nation to offer both nationally accredited graduate public administration and urban planning degrees.
- The school offers the only fully online Master of Public Administration degree in Texas.
- In its latest rankings, US News & World Report rates SUPA as one of the best graduate schools of public affairs in the nation.
SUPA has produced more than 900 graduates, many of whom hold key management positions in the public sector and in nonprofit organizations. The school’s 250 students work alongside faculty and staff on real-life urban and public affairs projects in cooperation with city governments, public agencies and nonprofit groups.
For example, Professor Ard Anjomani’s urban planning class has helped numerous Texas governments, nonprofits and businesses. “Using the talents of our graduate students, we have delivered valuable economic development research and technical assistance to groups that otherwise could not afford these services,” Dr. Anjomani said.
