Case for Support
Well-trained educators develop highly skilled students who, in turn, benefit society through their knowledge and abilities. The University of Texas at Arlington’s College of Education continues to advance this cycle through programs in curriculum and instruction, educational leadership and policy studies, and kinesiology.
Expansion
Through its external outreach program named “Partners for the Future,” the College of Education seeks to share resources and collaborate with its public education partners. New faculty, innovative partnerships and an expanding curriculum have combined to make the College of Education one of the fastest growing academic areas on campus. Enrollment has increased more than 700 percent in the past six years. Students pursue a variety of certifications, programs and degree options. Offerings include bilingual certification, superintendency and principalship certificates, a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, masters degrees in curriculum and instruction, and a joint Ph.D. with the School of Urban and Public Affairs.
Growth and excellence are College of Education hallmarks:
- U.S. News & World Report recently named the master of education program among the best online graduate programs in the nation.
- The Department of Kinesiology’s athletic training education program is one of only four in Texas to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.
The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies has the largest superintendency program of its kind in the state.
Impact
Count former student Lynn Dehart among those whose career has benefited from an education at the UTA School of Social Work. He recently advanced from principal to superintendent after completing the program. “Education runs on certification,” he said, “and the UT Arlington superintendency program is the best one around.”
In the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, the College of Education lies within a 60-mile radius of more than 180 independent school districts with a combined enrollment approaching one million. Capitalizing on its urban setting, the college has emerged as a leader in PreK-16 public education partnerships. Its collaboration includes agreements with school districts, community colleges, the business community and other universities.
With increased cost and growth evident in higher and public education and a decrease in the amount of traditional funding, sharing resources and collaborating with public and private partners is ever more important.
