Drawn to outstanding academic disciplines, professors, student activities and career preparation, student enrollment at the University of Texas at Arlington has increased dramatically over the last several years, from 18,662 in Fall 1998 to over 25,000 in Fall 2005.  In the meantime, a dwindling percentage of UT Arlington’s operating budget comes from state appropriations.  The University and its academic programs, therefore, must rely on the generous support of alumni, friends, corporate partners, and foundations to help us meet the needs of our growing student population.  Learn more about initiatives and priorities within each of UT Arlington’s schools and colleges:

Case for Support
Increasing the number of highly skilled engineers is vital to the advancement of society. Throughout history engineers have contributed to many of the world’s most revolutionary life-changing inventions such as the computer and the automobile, not only in the expected areas of transportation, construction and communications, but also in medicine, materials and computing. With a curriculum focusing on real-world applications and cutting – edge research, The University of Texas at Arlington’s College of Engineering produces expertly trained, thoroughly educated graduates ready to lead the next wave of advancements.

Excellence
The college provides one of the most comprehensive engineering programs in Texas and the nation with 8 baccalaureate, 14 master’s and 10 doctoral degree offerings within seven departments.  With approximately 4,000 students, it is the third largest engineering college in Texas.

The College of Engineering continues to distinguish itself nationally and internationally:

  • The college awards the third most engineering doctoral degrees in Texas and is among the top 50 colleges in the nation in graduate degrees awarded.
  • Engineering students won first, second and third place four times during the first six years of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International Aerial Robotics competition; a feat unmatched by any university in the world.
  • Graduates include two Space Shuttle astronauts and an alumnus who led a team of programmers that developed tasking maneuvers for the Mars Rovers.
  • UTA’s Fort Worth Riverbend campus is home to the Automation & Robotics Research Institute, the premier technology transfer center in the Southwest, where academia and industry merge to develop innovative and efficient manufacturing processes.
College of Engineering graduates are highly employable and have a strong presence in countless companies such as Texas Instruments, LockHeed Martin, and Nokia among others.

Real World Application
The College of Engineering at UT Arlington prepares its graduates for a competitive work environment.  Jason Losh, a distinguished member of the technical staff at Motorola, earned three degrees from UT Arlington and is also an adjunct member of the Electrical Engineering faculty. He credits his professors with preparing him for success in the workplace. “The guidance of countless members of the faculty, especially my dissertation sponsor, was by far the most beneficial aspect of my education,” said Losh.

Several of the more than 140 faculty members hold multiple patents, and 23 are Fellows of professional societies. Well equipped research and instructional laboratories, from electro-optics to neural networks, from hypersonic wind tunnels to the Nanotechnology Research and Teaching Facility, allow professors and students to investigate and develop processes and applications leading to the next generation of technological innovations.
