Distinction
The Graduate School at the University of Texas at Arlington is a focus of intellectual and cultural activity that has much to offer students, community, state and national leaders. It is a unique environment in that it strikes a healthy balance between personal growth, theoretical study, practical coursework, and economic impact. This balance has caused the school to develop from its initial offering of six master’s degrees in 1966, to one of the most comprehensive centers for advanced study in the region. Today more than 6,000 students pursue master’s degrees in 77 disciplines and doctoral degrees in 35 areas.
Case for Support
Universities are better equipped to attract the best graduate students by offering assistantships that enable them to work as apprentice teachers and researchers in areas related to their program of study. The better funded these positions are in terms of stipends, tuition fellowships, and health insurance, the better the likelihood of attracting the type of students who can make the difference between success and failure in the lab.
Graduate education is not only a private benefit but also a public good. An increase in graduate student compensation is needed if The UTA Graduate School is to carry out the mission of producing the faculty who teach our undergraduates, train our workforce, and advance the applied and basic research initiatives that contribute to the well-being of all current and future Americans.
Impact
Kanna Rajan, who earned his master’s degree at UTA, exemplifies the far reaching impact of a UTA graduate education. After completing his degree in Computer Science, Rajan went on to lead a team of specialists in developing software to control NASA’s Mars rovers: “UTA provided me the basics in artificial intelligence that I now use at NASA. The focus at UTA is on real-world applications.” For the past 40 years, The Graduate School at UTA has propelled students, like Rajan, to rewarding careers through a broad array of nationally recognized programs and a distinguished record of excellence.
