Drawn to outstanding academic disciplines, professors, student activities and career preparation, student enrollment at the University of Texas at Arlington has increased dramatically over the last several years, from 18,662 in Fall 1998 to over 25,000 in Fall 2005.  In the meantime, a dwindling percentage of UT Arlington’s operating budget comes from state appropriations.  The University and its academic programs, therefore, must rely on the generous support of alumni, friends, corporate partners, and foundations to help us meet the needs of our growing student population.  Learn more about initiatives and priorities within each of UT Arlington’s schools and colleges:

Case for Support
A solid foundation in the liberal arts is the cornerstone of higher education: training the mind and the senses, providing knowledge of world culture and history, enabling students to proceed from assembling information to developing insights and wisdom, educating the heart, and developing creativity. Students in Liberal Arts acquire tools of analysis, interpretation, and critical thinking that prepare them for a range of careers particularly in law and teaching. The education offered in the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Arlington is designed to help students live rich, purposeful, and effective lives in a challenging, diverse, and increasingly technological environment.

Excellence
More than 4,500 students in the college pursue degrees in thirteen departments and five programs and centers. The Ph.D. programs in English, Transatlantic History and Linguistics have been recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and contribute greatly to the college’s growing academic reputation. Liberal Arts faculty have been honored by grants and awards from Bolivia, Korea and the People's Republic of China and have served as Visiting Professors around the world.  Their works has been distinguished by such prestigious organizations as the American Academy in Rome, the British Academy, the Mellon Foundation, the Stanford Humanities Center and supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science Foundation and Fulbright.  Liberal Arts students have received Fulbright Fellowships, awards for work in graphic design and film, and many other awards and scholarships.

Among the College of Liberal Arts’ other distinctions:

  • Faculty have been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and have received numerous national and international awards, including Choice Magazine's Outstanding Academic Book of the Year.
  • The criminal justice program is the largest in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and the only one in the area that offers a graduate degree
  • Students may pursue a minor in Mexican-American studies, the only such offering in North Texas
Through their research and accomplishments, faculty are actively involved in shaping the disciplines they teach. Their innovative methods of instruction prepare students to take part in the activities and conversations of the future. A leader in distance education, the college offers several online courses and programs to meet the needs of today’s increasingly global society.

Growth
Considered among the best in the nation, a new 35,000-square-foot Studio Arts Center has boosted the college’s status as a leader in the art world. The center houses several programs, including a student–run gallery and an internationally recognized glass blowing program. “We have the only undergraduate glass program in this part of the country,” says Associate Professor David Keens. “Demand is so high that we could fill as many classes as we could offer.”

The Center for Southwestern Studies and the History of Cartography is also undergoing growth. The Center partners with the Special Collections division of the Library to study and expand its collection of over 5,000 historical maps and 3,000,000-plus photographic images.  Of special interest to the Center and its Fellows is the Virginia Garrett Cartographic History Library, which was established in 1978 to support the rich holdings of the Division in documenting Texas and Southwestern history from the beginning of European exploration to the present.

Support for the College of Liberal Arts will allow these programs to continue to grow.  The promotion of understanding in our diverse cultural milieu and an appreciation of the aesthetic experience greatly add to the value of education at The University of Texas at Arlington.
