Current Students A Message from the Department Chair
Welcome to the Department of History. As you will learn from the pages of our website our department offers a variety of courses to complete a major in History as well as to support and enhance other degree programs in the College of Liberal Arts. Our department offers students who major in History a wide range of topical, regional, and chronological courses that broaden their understanding of the field and improve their knowledge of the past. Our survey courses in American History provide all students who enroll at UTA six hours of the core curriculum mandated by the state of Texas. Thus, our department serves the University in two ways: as a service department that provides UTA students two important courses in their core curriculum; and as a department that provides students access to upper level courses in which they can learn the most recent and most cutting edge interpretations of the scholarship in the field of History. Students who complete a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in our department have the opportunity to work with faculty who have a wide variety of expertise and interests. Our faculty’s scholarly expertise and interests range from the History of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Texas and Transatlantic History to Cartography, the Greco-Roman period, the African Diaspora, and Russian History. The department also offers specialized courses in Human Geography and Environmental History. The diversity of course offerings in our undergraduate program allows us to prepare our majors for a wide range of career opportunities. Indeed, our majors have pursued successful careers in government and foreign service, archives and museum management, teaching, public relations, as well as business and community social service agencies. Our department offers students a rigorous Master’s degree in History as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in the newly emerging field of Transatlantic History. Our doctoral program is one of only four doctoral programs offered in UTA’s College of Liberal Arts. The Transatlantic History doctoral program also provides students full fellowships, opportunities to teach in the undergraduate program, and research support that encourages them to complete their degrees in a timely manner. Please explore our website fully in order to gain more information about the opportunities for graduate research in our department. As the chair of the Department of History I am very proud of how my colleagues serve our students and prepare them for careers in History or other related fields. Our mission as a department is to serve our students, the University, and the community at large by teaching about the past in a manner that enlightens the present. We want our students to use this historical knowledge and insight to serve humanity in the best possible way. This is a special mission for our department; we take it seriously; and we act on it in every class that we teach each semester, every year. Come and see me. My door is always open at 202 University Hall. W. Marvin Dulaney, Chair |
