Competency in one foreign language is required to obtain the Master's degree. Both the Thesis and Non-Thesis programs require the completion of this foreign language requirement for graduation.
The Language requirement can be satisfied in one of three ways:
1) Completion of four semesters of college credit in an approved language with a grade of "C" or higher.
2) Successful completion of a reading comprehension examination administered by the Department of Modern Languages.
3) Successful completion of a reading comprehension examination administered by a faculty member of the History Department.
The Modern Languages Department offers a course (5301) to prepare students to take a reading comprehension exam. This one semester course is designed to give students with no previous background in a language the ability to read that language at the level of comprehension necessary to pass a reading exam. The course itself does not satisfy the language requirement, but it can serve as a useful tool for students who decide to satisfy the requirement by taking a reading examination.
Students wishing further information on this course should contact the Modern Languages Department.
