The UTA Department of History and Honors College welcomed students and teachers from Texas Region 21 to the annual National History Day competition last Saturday, March 3rd. This year’s event, which drew emerging young scholars from sixteen schools in Fort Worth and Arlington, included approximately 180 individual and group entries submitted by 326 students.

Junior (6th-8th grade) and Senior (9th-12th) Division entrants developed Documentary; Exhibit; Paper; Performance; and Website projects on the theme – Conflict and Compromise in History –which was chosen by the national organization “to provide an opportunity for students to push past the antiquated view of history as mere facts and dates and drill down into historical content to develop perspective and understanding.”

The top two entries in each category earned the right to move on the State of Texas National History Day competition which will be held on Saturday, April 28th at the University of Texas at Austin and the Bullock Texas State History Museum.

The Department wishes to thank the many teachers, faculty, students, and community members who volunteered their time and energy to serve as judges. We owe special gratitude to UTA History graduate student William Hansard and UTA Libraries’ Special Collections Archivist Samantha Dodd for the many hours they devoted to organizing and running the event!

Congratulations to all of the budding young scholars who made their own history with their Region 21 projects!

And best of luck to those who will be traveling to Austin to compete for a chance to move on to The National Contest which will be held June 10-14 at the University of Maryland, College Park.
