Developed in response to recent trends away from strict national histories, Transatlantic History is an exciting, imaginative new field among the global history and comparative history subject areas that are now in demand. Whether the student's future employment is in the area of education and teaching, research, government, or business, doctoral work in Transatlantic studies will make the job candidate attractive to future employers.

Job Opportunities for Transatlantic History Graduates in the Academy
- History programs with a transnational focus have successfullly placed students either in programs like their own, or in traditional programs that welcome Ph.Ds. whose transnational training provides them with the versatility necessary to teach a diverse assortment of courses.
- Many universities today do not have the funding that would permit hiring in the traditional, national fields of history. History departments must therefore advertise for positions that require training in multiple fields, like that offered in UTA's Transatlantic program.
- Recent students of job placement for Ph.D. graduates in history confirm that students with the kind of broad, thematic training UTA's Transatlantic Program offers will do far better in today's market than do candidates with a more traditional educational background (see the Real Guide to Graduate School, Linguafranca Books, 1997).
- Recent studies published by the American Historical Association also conclude that the demand in the academy for graduates with training in multiple, transnational fields of history was stronger than for Ph.Ds. with training in traditional national histories. (American Historical Association, Perspectives).
- In recent years, openings in North American history fell 14%, while openings for students trained in transnational histories rose 35%. (Perspectives, March 1997).
- "Although world history was hardly heard of in 1980, it is now the most requested second field." Oliver Pollack and Valerie L. Garver, Perspectives 35 (May/June 1997), 34.
- There is much evidence that a strong demand exists for students trained in Transatlantic History, Cartographic History, and the African Diaspora. Job bulletins regularly attest to the opportunities that graduates of UTA's Transatlantic program will have in today's job market.

Job Opportunities for Transatlantic History Graduates Outside the Academy
- Students will have the broad training in transnational and comparative issues that will give them access to a wide variety of positions outside the academy in settings such as museums, libraries, historical societies, preservation groups, government agencies, and corporations, all of which will welcome candidates with credentials beyond the traditional, narrower national fields of history taught in most doctoral programs.
- The cartographic expertise and training in related technologies acquired by students in UTA's doctoral program in Transatlantic History will make them attractive in today's non-academic job market.
